On Buying Handmade and a new Contest

After the experience of one (yes, just one) of our solar lights disappearing from our frontyard, Dave & I are a little leery of putting out anything too nifty out front.  However, we can decorate the backyard and have been thinking about what to get.

Decorating the backyard primarily means, in our case, putting something up on the turquoise wall.  I was thinking lanterns, Dave was thinking hanging wall art of a celestial nature (suns, stars, moons).  We debated the merits of Talavera objects but decided on metal.

So, yesterday afternoon, after getting the fountain running and scattering a few more river rocks, I plopped myself down in front of the computer and started searching on Etsy (and Artfire, but had less luck there).

I have to say, I really, really love the idea of Etsy.  However, it is a MAJOR pain to search.  Very clunky and time consuming.

I found two vendors that we’re going to order from:  My Truck Leroy (link is to their own homepage rather than Etsy) — one of my faves from them is already sold but their site says they’ll do custom orders/make to order —  and Winfield Designs (for some garden stakes, two stars & a moon).

…..some time later…..some work in the front yard…..harvesting a million tomatoes, getting the plants cleaned up, etc, etc……

….I got a wonderful email from Jessica at My Truck Leroy.  Dave & I have to finalize what we want & I have to get back to her.  Excited!

Some things are wonderful handmade but some are just as wonderful when mass produced. Handmade are a bit more expensive but since I make things (knit, crochet, sew, can..etc) I know how much people like handmade stuff. So I buy both depending on what I am needing and wanting.

I like to support those who make really nice handmade items, and I love receiving homemade gifts (more thoughtful, I think, in most cases)… but when I’m laying money out, I want to make sure I’m getting what I want.

I love buying handmade items. It gives you something unique and different from what other people have!

I try to buy handmade whenever possible. I find the quality is often better than mass produced items. Additionally, should there be any issues, the indie artist is often very willing to fix them.

    Buy Handmade!

Oh, as for buying in Etsy – I too find the search function a bit tedious. Hope they do something about that 😉

I try very hard to buy handmade things. I have been raised in a home that made everything. so handmade is much better. On the flipside…I have 4young kids and buying homemade is harder.

I voted (never thought about it) because when you’re just living and trying to survive, you buy what you need when you find it. Of course, hand made is usually much better and if you can get a good deal on it – great! But I’m just learning how many things are out there that people have made. The internet has really opened a lot up for everyone.

If I have a choice between the two, I prefer the handmade, but it also depends on the recepient and if they’ll appreciate the ‘handmade-ness’ of it.

Jackie sent me! I love the idea of handmade items but don’t see a lot of them where I live deep in the Ozarks. Most folks here either buy new from a store or do without. I’m new to your readership but I think I’ll keep coming back!.

I love handmade and often times find it much better quality. I have kids so my budget doesn’t always stretch to handmade for them all the time. That being said I also like the diy facet of life ,my parents taught me to be willing to make do, make it myself, or trade skills with someone who can.I do knit and spin and have to say that for the ones that are special in my life handmade is the choice I make.

I am a mass produced kind of gal. I love to look at hand/home made things and could spend hours at craft fairs. It’s so expensive to buy home made that I really only do it for the holidays/birthdays and mainly just for my mom.

I buy things that I like, sometimes handmade sometimes mass produced. I do enjoy buying handmade things very much, I always feel that I’m getting something unique and supporting an artist.

I voted Yes, but only if I can find them cheaper than similar mass produced items. Because, I can often find things cheaper AND better than if it was commercially produced.
