The end of the year…

December 31st, 2009 · 1 Comment

Sw’Elegant, my new fingerless mitten pattern, is currently being test-knit; I’m planning on publishing the pattern in the next week. Here’s a pic of the prototype:

I’m also bouncing around ideas for another pair, Manzanita, with some wandering cables and lace.
Yesterday we had a rainy trip out to Tree of Life nursery in San [...]

On Resolutions

December 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment

No surprise that I enjoy making resolutions (i.e. glorified goals).
I don’t always — well, let’s be honest, I rarely stick to them.  But I do enjoy the process of making them, the planning, the introspection.  Kind of like decluttering on a mental level.   I thoroughly acknowledge that my interests wax, wane, etc throughout the year, [...]

’twas the night (well, day) before….

December 24th, 2009 · 2 Comments

…and, with some tweaking of the spreadsheet, I’m considering myself 97% done with my holiday knitting (as of 11:20 a.m. PST).
Totals:

12 hats
5 pairs of socks
1 pair of mittens
9 pairs of fingerless mittens
3 assorted small toys
1 pillow

Most, though not all, have been delivered….
The Klahhane Switchbacks sock pattern is now up on Ravelry!

Definitely a knit for the [...]

Miscellaneous…and shark breach in October

December 17th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Holiday knitting continues, but is nearly complete.  It’d help if I didn’t keep adding to the list.
I made a new batch of yogurt yesterday, adding a bit of powdered milk.  Definitely more solid.
A new pattern, Klahhane Ridge Socks, is being test knit;  pics up on my project page.  I’m hoping to publish the pattern by [...]

Winter 2009 Planting!

December 14th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Dave and I had a very rainy trip to Theodore Payne this Saturday.  We figured we’d fill in some of the bare spots in the garden….since we’re going to be on the Garden Tour!  We had a lovely visit with Lili and she gave tons of tips for our garden.
Anyhow, here’s what we got:
Sunny areas:

Arctostaphylos [...]

First Attempt at Yogurt

December 10th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I made yogurt today!
Despite scalding the milk and burning my thumb (blisters!), the end result seems tasty so far (will add a bit of honey & fruit tonight to some of it to really try it).
I used 1/2 gallon of 1% milk from Whole Foods and some nonfat Stoneyfield Farms plain yogurt for my starter.
I [...]

On Swatching

December 8th, 2009 · No Comments

Very few people are neutral on the idea of swatching.
I’m not saying whether you like to swatch, or not;  but whether or not swatching should occur.
I fall into the ’swatching is a necessary and valuable process’ camp.  Others feel, quite adamantly, that it is a worthless waste of time, their gauge never ends up matching [...]

December! and still a fair amount of knitting to do….

December 1st, 2009 · No Comments

To date I’ve completed

7 of 8 pairs of fingerless mitts
11 of 12 hats
1 of 2 pairs of mittens
3 of 7 pairs of socks (2 of the remaining 4 are in progress)
1 of 3 toys
and 1 pillow

I’m hoping to start at least one pair of socks/footies today.  I’ve had to go back to the yarn stash [...]
