Review: Time On My Hands by Becky Herrick

Time On My Hands by Becky Herrick, 27 pp. Available through Ravelry.

Time On My Hands, Becky Herrick’s first (of many, I hope!) ebook, is a collection of nine different mittens, fingerless mitts, gloves, and cuffs.  The designs are inspired by either a time of day or type of clock.  Techniques range from simple stockinette to lace, cables, stranded knitting, and more.

Need some pretty but quick to knit holiday gifts?  This is a fantastic collection for that purpose.

My favorite patterns include Bewitching Hour (a cabled glove pattern that will let a special skein of yarn really shine) and Tea Time (I love the clever swirly buttoned cuff).  Morningtide Mitts would be a great intro to stranding.

What’s your favorite pattern?  For a chance to win your own copy of the ebook, graciously supplied by Becky, leave a comment on this post with your favorite pattern by midnight PST October 25th.

I received my copy of the ebook from the author.  My opinions are my own.

I think I love the design and colourways of Morningtide the most. Or maybe Tea Time? Not so much the buttons, but I do love the little bobbles.

I really like Tea Time, but a really don’t like afterthought thumbs, so I’d have to go with Grandfather Clock as an out-and-out favorite. I just LOVE the color changes!! Thanks for the chance to win. All the patterns are pretty groovy!! :-)

Pour a cup of tea for me! Love the lace & bobbles of Tea Time and have never made an afterthought heel so I’m thinking it would be a good learning experience. I hope!

My favorite is definitely Cocktail Hour! I’d love to do that in a bronze and make it look a little steampunk. :) I’ve had her Queen City mitts in my queue forever and am just a little intimidated! And if I ever learn to do a sweater, I want to make Cambridge Cables. Don’t know if I’ll ever get to that place. ;)

I like Sun Dial the best. I would probably knit them just a little bit longer up the arm.

  • Emily October 21, 2011, 4:35 pm

I really like the Sun Dial mitts. Simple and elegant!

It’s hard to pick a favorite but I’ll go with Grandfather clock because of the great use of Mini Mochi.

I’m really liking sun dial. Just into cables these days, I guess.
They’d make a pretty awesome christmas present

Whoa, these patterns are amazing! I’m with you in hoping this will be tge first of many pattern collections.
I like a good concept and beautiful project photography, they make interesting patterns even more gorgeous.
I like Cocktail Hour for its whimsy and Tea Time for its warm and comfy look.

I love Bewitching Hour – I really appreciate patterned gloves that include the fingers, since they seem (to me) much harder to improvise or adapt than the fingerless versions.

  • Diana H October 24, 2011, 4:54 am

I liked all of them, but I think my favorite is Bewitching Hour. Or maybe Tea Time. No, it’s definitely Cocktail Hour. Wait. Do I have to pick only one?

  • Carmen October 24, 2011, 2:41 pm

Lots of great patterns, but I think my fav is Morningtide

  • kat-taz-trophe October 25, 2011, 9:27 am

Lovely! I would get quite a bit of use out of that book as well!
I have been knitting hats like crazy for the elementary school Safety Patrol. Going to put them up as an earned incentive. These are 5th & 6th graders, so they are kids & adult sized.
Was thinking after I get through a round of hats that mittens, gloves & fingerless mitts should come up in queue. They have to take their little fingers out all the time. I have already knit a few mitts, but went back to the hats to finish one round of them first.
I like several of these patterns for the project, Playtime, Morningtide, Grandfather Clock, Sundial, Digital Age….lots of material here!

Morningtide: nice striped thumb and picot edge!
